Here is the touching story of an awakening young Amish girl, Katie Raber, who finds she wants more from life than to be known as simply “Emma Raber’s daughter.”

Emma has refused to remarry since Katie’s daett died soon after she was born. And in an effort to keep Katie home, Emma has forbidden her from participating in the rumspringa tradition.

When widower Jesse Mast calls for Mamm’s hand in marriage, Katie hopes to move into a new phase of life and leave the old “Emma Raber’s daughter” behind.  But Emma is having none of it, and Katie must consider abandoning all hope of ever changing her mamm’s bitterness or of ever having popular Ben Yoder notice her.  Out of sheer frustration, she begins attending nearby Mennonite youth gatherings.

Sparks fly when Jesse’s children object fiercely to the attentions their daett is paying to Emma Raber. And widowed Ruth Hochstetler makes her own move for Jesse Mast’s hand.

Book one in the Emma Raber’s Daughter series.

My Comments:  I am taking very good advantage of my three week Christmas break to catch up on my TBR pile!  This book by Jerry Eicher is another wonderful Amish fiction book.  I keep wondering when the authors will run out of story lines, but it doesn’t seem to happen.  I’ve realized I love reading these books because it takes me to a world where most things are “pure”.  Faith matters and so does pleasing God. Everybody knows the rules and expectations and try to follow them.  Each person seems to know his/her place and the roles are defined.  Anyway this book was very engaging and I read it in one day!  When I first began reading it, I thought this is really different and how does a man get inside a woman’s and a young girl’s head so well.  I don’t really know the answer to that, but he does.  Both Emma and Katie seem quite naive to me, but maybe this goes along with the Amish lifestyle.  The book ends on a definite cliff-hanger, and I will read the rest of this series!  Some of the characters infuriated me, and some won my heart. I recommend this book and this author to lovers of Amish fiction!

I enjoy reading Jerry Eicher’s books because I know they are authentic. He lived the life and speaks from experience, unlike the majority of amish fiction writers.
