So I have to admit. I caved. I’ve almost finished reading the first novel in the Twilight series. And I actually plan to read all four books. I watched the first movie when it came out and thought it was way too “teeny-boppy” for my taste and even at that pretty awful. But then . . . I saw the second movie. And while the second movie was only slightly better (because there was a bit more action!), it did make me want to find out what happens next and so here I am reading the novels.
What do you all think of these books? I think the the vampire mythology is interesting and the story is somewhat creative, but the relationship between Edward and Bella is pretty dreadful. As soon as they meet, life is not worth living if they are not together. She is miserable when she is not with him. I want to shout, “Get a life!” These books will not be read by my daughters (when they are older of course!) without some serious discussion about what makes a healthy relationship. Plus, how can she get so worked up about a guy who is so cold every time he touches her? Brrr!
I’m not giving a real review here, because I haven’t finished the book. I almost feel like I’m going to need to finish all four before I really know what I think about this series. I’ve heard that the books are better than the movies, and the fourth book is the best. Care to voice your opinion?

LOL, finally caved huh? I actually had a friend give me the books to read before the fourth was out and she told me they were just THE BEST books ever. I read them, and they were interesting, but I honestly have still never been able to figure out what the hype was about. When the fourth came out I read all of them again and I actually liked them a bit better, mostly just because I could appreciate how good Meyer was at hooking the reader. It’s still a hokey story…but I think people need to remember….it’s just. a. story. Meyer is not trying to tell girls what kind of love to look for.
Oh, and I am almost always hot so I can see the allure of a cold guy. Weird, huh?
I look forward to your opinion once you’re done.

CRIES!!!!!!!
I read the first one, but won’t read the rest. I did love The Host, though.
And I love vampires!!!

I was APPALLED by the relationship between Bella and Edward, and I thought Meyer’s writing was atrocious. That said, I read all four books and would read more. So take from that what you will!

I read Twilight and New Moon. I have friends in their 20’s and 30’s who can’t stop talking about it. Unfortunately, I didn’t get all the hype. After reading New Moon, I decided I was on Team Jacob and that from here on out I didn’t really care what happened to Bella or the rest of them. I saw the movie Twilight and will probably see New Moon on DVD, but just wasn’t one of those can’t-put-it-down kind of reads for me. Just no desire to read the rest of them…so many other great reads out there waiting for my time!

I LOVE the Twilight series.
Its actually what got me reading again after so many years.
You’ll see why I love Jacob in New Moon

LOL! Knew I would get some replies on this one! I can especially relate to Connie’s comment – I am reading these books, wondering why I am doing it, and yet all the same feel propelled by some odd force to finish them. Admittedly, I know some of it has to do with the fact that everyone else has read them and the fact that I must know how the story ends!
Juju – I saw the New Moon movie, so at this point I agree about Jacob – we’ll see as the series goes on!

I had so many friends who wanted me to read the series, so I finally caved and read the first book. I could understand why so many people liked it (um, hottie vampires — yum), but a lot of it just felt wrong. I work with high school girls and there were aspects of the book that made me feel like it was subliminally telling young girls that it’s okay to stay with dangerous men (he even knew he was dangerous!) because they love them. Yeesh.

I have the set of four at my house waiting to be read. My twins have read the series like 1,000 times!

I felt the same way you did! When I was at the movies watching the first film, I couldn’t help rolling my eyes pretty much the entire time. After I watched New Moon, I wanted to know the rest of the story! I bought all four books and read them in four weeks. I felt like punching Bella as soon as I started reading, but my hate/pity relationship with her kept me reading ’til the end. The fourth book for me was the worst. My favorite book was Eclipse!

Two weeks actually! I read them in two weeks!!

I would disagree about the fourth book being the best. For me there were too many inconsistencies with the world she had created! I have to agree re The Host though – excellent, excellent book.
Oh, and the books are definitely better than the movie, but that is normally the case.

Okay – I admit it. I’m a Twilight fan. I was reluctant to read the books because of the subject matter. I even read a scathing review about not letting your daughters make the mistake of falling for a teen vampire “loser”. But all my friends (and their daughters) were raving about the book so I finally caved. Well once I started I couldn’t stop. I read all 4 books within 2 months. Twilight is basically a good romance novel with a twist. I do think that Stephanie Meyers, the author, put some kind of hex on her books to make them addictive. Whatever it is, I would sure love to have the same kind of following for my book, The Victor! One can always dream, right?
