As I have mentioned many times before on this blog, I teach second grade children. Recently it was brought to my attention by a THIRD grade teacher that there are not enough easy chapter books for third grade girls. What do you think? Do you know of any I could suggest to her besides the classic Magic Treehouse, June B. Jones, Boxcar Children or Magic Schoolbus? We are in the business of encouraging and fostering a love of reading in children and we both buy hundreds of books for our classroom libraries. I have spent so much of my time worrying about having interesting things for BOYS that I never thought about girls’ books, although I have all the ones I mentioned and more. Please help me, reading friends. You will be doing a great service for children who may not have parents who care enough to supply their own children with good books. We have Accelerated Reader at our schools and spend at least 30 minutes a day reading self-selected books. Any suggestions you could send my way would be very much appreciated!

When I was in third grade I was reading the Little House on the Prairie series, Trixie Belden books, The Wizard of Oz books. Island of the Blue Dolphins is a good classic. Bronte’s Book Club would be a good follow up to Island of the Blue Dolphins. She might like Roald Dahl (I don’t but my kids do).

I can never remember the recommended ages for reading various books, but my daughter, currently nine, has enjoyed the following:
Michael Morpurgo
Some Cornelia Funke
Elisabeth Kay (Divide trilogy)
Michelle Paver, Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series
Anne Fine
For the record, I enjoyed them too!

My daughter just loves the Cam Jansen series of books.
Now, it might be a little too easy for the 11 year olds, depending on where their reading levels are. My daughter is 6 1/2 and well beyond her reading level for her grade and age. She is about a year ahead of where she is “supposed” to be and just flies through these books with minimal to no help.

The Girls ‘N Grace series is very good! Of course, American girl books are a big hit too!

Go to the Beverly Lewis Books wedsite and she has her books listed by age from adult to youth series. She ever has one group that are for girls only. These are good clean books.

Here are a few book series that my daughter enjoyed when she was in 3rd grade:
- Clementine (by Sara Pennypacker) – I think there are only a couple of books in this series
- Nancy Drew Clue Crew series (by Carolyn Keene)
- Ruby and the Booker Boys series(by Derrick Barnes)
- Sister Magic series (by Anne Mazer)
- Puppy Place series (by Ellen Miles)
She also liked Andrew Clements’ chapter books including Frindle, The Book Report, & Lunch Money.

Dear Sally,
I hope you will suggest Planet Of The Dogs (your review, May 3) to this teacher…Please let us know if you would like to review the other books in the Planet of the Dogs series — Castle In The Mist and Snow Valley Heroes.
Our books are recommended by teachers, including Julie Hauck, who developed the Pages for Preston therapy reading dog program for second and third graders.
Best wishes,
Robert McCarty

I would suggest Little House on the Prairie or Anne of Green Gables for girls. Sugar Creek Gang for boys.

If any of your students enjoy historical fiction, they will love Journey to the Ice by Jennifer Slattery (myself). It is about a young boy living during the time of the Tower of Babel who begins to question the status quo in order to begin his own quest for truth. But when the only city he has ever known turns into a chaotic mess of anger, hatred and distrust, his quest for truth becomes secondary to his fight for survival.
