The election of the next United States president is an exciting one.  It will be historical no matter what the outcome.  It is thought-provoking, emotional, and at times even frightening.  As a country, we all want change to some degree on one issue or another.  But which candidate is best qualified to lead the country through the hard times we are facing?  Which candidate will best meet our needs as a nation both at home and abroad?

In his book, The Audacity of Hope, Barack Obama sets forth the thesis that although republicans and democrats disagree on the methods of accomplishing their goals, there are some values that both parties can agree on, and that is where change can start.  We will not see change if both parties continue to treat each other as the enemy, as if the other party’s opinion has no value and is wrong absolutely.

In the book, Obama goes through some of the history of his political life.  He also talks about different issues we face as a country today and how he believes the political parties came to be so bitterly opposed to one another.  He talks about his faith, the race issues in America, a bit about his growing up years, and a bit about his family.  He also writes in broad terms about the direction he believes the country needs to be going in.  He is very much a democrat and is clear on those beliefs.

This is a well-written book.  Obama is very optimistic about Americans and America as a country.  I gained a lot of insight into who he is by reading this book (or at least who he wants to portray himself as!  I mean, let’s face it – he’s still a politician!).  Reading this book did sway my opinion of who I would vote for, but I won’t tell in what direction!

           Happy voting!
