It’s quite a popular notion among authors that they should keep blogs for publicity. But does it work?

Do you read any blogs by authors on a regular basis? Have you ever discovered a new author because of their blog? Do you feel a stronger connection with their work because you read their blog? Or does it hinder the experience?

I (Amy) read and enjoy a lot of author’s blogs. At first I was worried that it would hinder my experience of reading the book. For example, if I knew they had struggled in writing it…would I be able to read that struggle into it? Would I keep hearing their voice instead of the characters? I think that in fact, it has actually enriched my reading experience and I think it really builds community between author and reader. I love the additional insight it provides. I’m completely addicted to reading author blogs now and even read some by authors I have never read.

Meg Cabot is one of my absolute favorite bloggers. She has such a natural way with blogging and humor. Check it out! (confession: I’ve never read a Meg Cabot book)

Megan Crane is another favorite. What I love about her blog is she is a voracious reader just like us! And she’s funny and smart. I’ve read every one of her books.

I also used to love Tess Gerritsen’s blog until she had to shut it down.

Who are your favorite authors who blog and why? Share them! If you are author who blogs, please share your experiences with it as well.

I follow a handful of author blogs, most of which are where a group of them have gotten together and take turns posting. I was attracted to the sites because of one or two authors I enjoy reading, but have been tempted to try those I didn’t know just from reading their posts.

I admit that I do more lurking than anything else. I love reading about the writing process, what influences the authors and all that good stuff. It makes me appreciate books even more.

You can still catch Tess now and then at the Murderati blog (link below). She’s joined the authors on that site since suspending her own blog. I loved her blog too.

    Some of my favorites:
    First Offenders
    Murderati
The Naked Truth About Literature and Life
    The Lipstick Chronicles
The Naked Truth About Literature and Life
For All the World to See (Author Colleen Gleason’s blog)

This is a great topic for discussion!

I’ve just discovered author’s blogs, and I regularly enjoy them. Angela Hunt’s http://alifeinpages.blogspot.com is one I read almost daily.

The only author blog I read regularly is Neil Gaiman’s journal. He does an amazing job of answering fan questions, talking about his work and influences, and just generally being awesome. I also read Historical Romance UK every once in a while - right now, Amanda Grange is blogging about writing Henry Tilney’s Diary, which is very exciting!

http://www.thedebutantesball.com features a rotating base of women authors and is always witty and charming. One thread involved each of them listing the contents of their purses and why they carried what they did:)

I just finally read Melissa Walker’s first book, Violet On the Runway after reading her blog for a few months. I may have read it without visiting her blog but that definitely put it into the front of my mind.

I’ve just started adding some author blogs to my Google reader, so I don’t yet have a “favorite”. But, yes, I enjoy them. It’s nice to see that authors are *real people* like you and I, and I love getting the inside scoop on their current work!
