Want your kids to spend a little more time with books? How about tempting them with a slightly later bedtime? The deal is this: the child is allowed to stay up 15 or 20 minutes later if he/she uses that time to read in bed. We even do this with our girls who aren’t reading yet – they look at the pictures, but are still growing a love for books.
Or how about this idea? (Especially useful for kids who can’t tell time yet!) It’s been a long, tiring day. Mom and Dad are ready to call it quits, but it really is too early to put the kids to bed yet. What to do? Send them to bed with a pile of books. They don’t have to go to sleep yet, but Mom and Dad can get the evening work done early and relax a little earlier themselves. And the kids are loving it because they think they are staying up later!
And here is one more idea to try on the weekends or for that super-early rising toddler. Send them to bed with a pile of books to look at in the morning. Or if that ends up being a problem, you could sneak in their room after they are already asleep with a pile of books to place at the end of the bed for them to find in the morning. Make sure the selection is varied often. The children can enjoy their books in the morning and you just might get a couple more minutes of sleep!
